How to Play Speed Baccarat: Twice as Fast, Twice as Fun
If you haven’t mastered the traditional baccarat rules and strategy, I recommend that you go back to the basics before trying speed baccarat. Speed baccarat is simply the faster version of baccarat. It requires more concentration and a slightly higher gambling skill level, so it would be difficult for you to beat the game if you’re not confident in your classic baccarat skills.
You don’t necessarily need to be a pro to play speed baccarat. After all, it’s just another luck-based game. But if you like a challenge and you’re in it to win it, you’ll need to be as prepared as possible. And that’s why in this article, I’ll be explaining how speed baccarat works and the best way to get started.
What is Speed Baccarat?
The difference between traditional baccarat and speed baccarat is that, in the former, there is no time limit for betting and each round usually lasts 48-50 seconds. But in the latter, players have to place their bets within 12-20 seconds and each round usually lasts 27 seconds. Besides the timing, everything else about speed baccarat is the same as the parent game.
What is Online Speed Baccarat?
Speed Baccarat is a game that is only played online because of the time limit and fun effects that get you in the zone, so you can just call it that instead of online speed baccarat. In this version, the playing time is cut in half, which means you need to be more attentive and also trust your gut more.
The great thing about this game is that you’ll be too invested in it to get bored. Your anticipation builds after each round. You’ll also be quite pleased with the quick payouts.
If you’re worried that it would feel like a fixed PvC (Player vs Computer) game, don’t be. The casinos that offer speed baccarat have a live chat facility that you can use to communicate with the dealer and other players. The live stream will also improve your gambling experience.
Facts about Speed Baccarat
Before we go into the rules of speed baccarat, here are a few facts that you should know about the game:
How to Play Speed Baccarat at Online Casinos
Speed baccarat is just a snappy variation of baccarat, so if you’ve played baccarat before, this will be more of a “back to basics” guide for you.
The game is played with eight standard 52-card decks. At the start of the game, you’ll be asked to place your bet.
Online casinos usually give a 12-second limit for betting, but some can give you up to 20 seconds. On the screen, you’ll see the sections for the banker bet, player bet, and tie bet. The goal is to predict who will get the winning hand, that is, a hand with a total value of 9 or the closest to 9.
After deciding which one to go for, the dealer will deal two cards each (face up to save time) to the player and the banker. The value of the player’s 2-card hand and the banker’s 2-card hand will then be compared, and whoever placed the winning bet will receive the payout.
Let’s take an example.
Jake joins a game of speed baccarat and quickly places his wager on the player bet. The dealer deals the cards and the player’s hand is a 3 of Hearts and 2 of Spades, while the banker’s is a 5 of Spades and 3 of Diamond.
In this case, the banker wins because the total hand value is 8 which is much closer to 9 than the player’s total of 5. Since Jake’s player bet lost, he won’t get any money from this round.
How to Calculate the Total Value of Your Baccarat Hand
From the example above, you might have noticed that I simply added the number value of the two cards in each hand. The calculation is that straightforward. However, some cards have different values than what you’re used to, especially if you’ve played blackjack.
Here are some things to keep in mind when calculating the value of your baccarat hand:
Let’s look at a couple more examples to better explain these points.
In the second round of a speed baccarat game, Jake places his wager on the player bet. This time around, the player receives 10 of Diamond and 2 of Hearts, while the banker receives 4 of Spades and 3 of Clubs.
If you calculate the value of the hands normally, the player will have a hand worth 12, and the banker worth 7. But since the player’s hand value is a two-digit number, it will be reduced to 2 (if you drop the first digit or count 10 as 0). This means that Jake lost again.
In the third round, Jake decides to switch to the banker bet. The player gets dealt King of Spades and Ace of Spades, while the banker gets dealt Queen of Hearts and 9 of Clubs.
If this were blackjack, the player bet would have won because those are great cards. Unfortunately, according to the rules of baccarat, the player’s value is 1 (K is worth zero and Ace is worth 1). With a lucky hand value of 9, Jake can finally win some money on the banker bet.
Sometimes, the banker and player can have the same total value. This is called a tie. If you placed a tie bet during this round, you’ll win a neat profit. But the chances of a tie occurring are pretty low. Some online casinos settle the tie/draw by drawing a third card.
A third card is also dealt when neither hand is close enough to 9. Whoever has the highest hand (not exceeding 9) after this wins the game.
Side Bets in Baccarat
Online casinos offer several side bets to make the game more interesting. You’ll find a small section next to the main bets where you can choose the side wager you’re interested in.
The most common side bets in speed baccarat include:
- Player Pair: You win this if the player gets a pair hand (two cards with the same number or face). The payout is 11:1.
- Banker Pair: You win this if the banker gets a pair hand. The payout is 11:1.
- Perfect Pair: You win this if two cards of the same suit and value are dealt as the first two cards to the player AND banker. The payout is 200:1.
- Player Bonus: When the player gets a natural 8 or 9, or wins by at least 4 points.
- Banker Bonus: When the banker gets a natural 8 or 9, or wins by at least 4 points.
Rules of Speed Baccarat
The basic rules of speed baccarat are:
- Bets have to be made before the cards are dealt
- You will miss out on a round if you don’t place your bet on the player, banker, or tie before the time runs out
- Two cards each are dealt to the player and banker
- The player hand is always first
- A third card will only be dealt if there is a draw or the total value is lower than 8 or 9 and the conditions of the Third Card Rule are met
- No additional cards will be drawn if either the player or banker receives a natural (8 or 9) on the first try
- The total numeric value of the card hand is the deciding factor
- The first digit of a double-digit value has to be dropped
- The round must end once the 48 seconds are up
- The payout for the player bet is 1:1
- The payout for the banker bet is 1:0.95. The house takes a 5% commission on the banker bet
- The payout for the tie bet is 8:1.
The Third Card Rule
The Third Card Rule in Baccarat also applies to Speed Baccarat. The player and banker have different rules for drawing a third card.
The player is only allowed to draw a third card if the total value of the first two cards falls between 1-5 or equals 0. If the value totals 6 or 7, the player will stand. And if the total is 8 or 9, there is a high chance that the player has won, unless the banker gets a higher natural or the same value.
The third card rules for the banker bet are more complicated. The banker can only draw a third card if:
- The initial two cards equal 0, 1, or 2.
- The initial two cards equal 3 and the value of the player’s third card is 1-7.
- The initial two cards equal 4 and the value of the player’s third card is 2-7.
- The initial two cards equal 5 and the value of the player’s third card is 4-7.
- The initial two cards equal 6 and the value of the player’s third card is 6-7.
- The banker cannot draw a third card if the initial two cards equal 7, 8, or 9.

Probability of Speed Baccarat

Winning Strategies of Speed Baccarat
There is no well-thought-out, guaranteed strategy that you can apply to beat speed baccarat. Even if there was one, you most likely wouldn’t get the chance to think carefully and apply it since you would be pressed for time. However, this doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to increase your odds a bit.
When playing speed baccarat, I recommend that you bet on the Banker. Why? It has the lowest house edge. It is the safest bet you can make.
You can bet on the Player if there have been conservative Banker wins, but you should NEVER play the tie bet. The payout is attractive but it’s not worth it. The house edge is too high and the odds of a tie occurring are very low.
